New Year’s Eve – now that used to be a big night for me in my younger years. Practically everyone I knew went to hear a band and dance the night away. That’s how I met my husband, Jeff. He was in a band that I had gone to see. Dancing was great exercise for me in those days. Sadly, that was a whole different era, and I think more sedate pastimes have taken over recreation time in people’s lives. When I met Jeff, I asked him how old he was. He replied that he would be 23 that year. I remember telling him that he would probably begin the aging process, or basically begin dying that year as most people do around the age of 23. Explaining further, I told him that the body begins to have more cells die than can be replaced, so technically, we begin dying at that point. I could tell he had never heard anything like that before, and that he was quite interested. Have you ever known a musician or a Christian that wasn’t interested in the topic of death? For the last few years, we have rung in the New Year with eating party food and watching movies at home. This year, it was the ‘Walking Dead’ marathon. However, when I watch television, I normally work out in some way. I lift weights, do crunches, push-ups, ski on the Nordic Trak, or even just step up and down on a step. I love to clean my house while playing an old movie. Even when I am driving, I am flexing and tensing my gluteal muscles. Try that some time when you are tired and having to drive. It really helps to wake you up. Besides, exercising becomes more and more important in the war against aging. It is the only way to force the body to build itself up more. Our bodies don’t waste energy. If we aren’t using it, atrophy is the result. Maybe this year, we can all try to move a little more than last year. I am a firm believer in every little bit helps. I miss my dancing days…but I prefer the television zombies to the real life ones.

I'm turning 50 this year. I still go out dancing with friends, including NYE. I've done quite a bit of line dancing, too. It's a great exercise that doesn't feel like exercise. It's just fun. I'm on the floor most of the night when I go. I play volleyball one a week during the Winter and softball once a week during the Summer. With my second knee surgery, due to pieces chipping off from impact, I'm contemplating the meaning of 50 even more. The good thing is, I have many fantastic role models over the age of 50 that are performing at a high level in sports.

That is the great thing about dancing; it really doesn't seem like you are exercising. I dance around the house sometimes, cleaning, etc. I also tend to start dancing on the treadmill at times, when I am blasting my music...which I don't really recommend as I have had a couple of close calls with falls. Ha! As is said, dance like nobody is watching. That has been my motto all along. I think it is great that you still go out and do it.
