Do you ever blame your parents for your faults, even when you know that nearly 99.9% of them are your own? When it comes to the physical side of things, however; there are some hereditary components that are passed on to us through genetics. Factoring into this also, are the things we are exposed to before we were even born. Such is the legacy of my hair. Without getting into all of that here, my hair has always had special needs. Add in menopause, and it really needs all of the care I can give it. When I was going through all of that, my hair went through some strange stages. It has always been rather dry, but for awhile, it even felt coated from all of the sebum produced. It was a really bizarre time. Now that things have settled down, there are some things in my hair care arsenal that I would like to share. Even though there are many supplements on the market that are targeted to promoting healthy hair, I have taken a product called 'Biosil' for years. I swear I could tell the difference. It is comprised of Silicon and Choline. I take the drops. They taste awful, but are worth it.
Coloring my hair has been a fact of life for many years. One of my very good friends, that also happens to be a hair stylist tells me to protect my hair color from the sun. "Just wear a hat" she says. Since I rarely take that advice, my hair color will get brassy looking, especially in the summer. When this happens, and I really need it to look better, I will put a little bit of grape kool-aid in my shampoo and wash as usual. Individual serving packets are available by the box, and I will use half of the individual serving pouch in a single washing. Note that I have brown hair, so I am not sure how that would work for any other hair colors. Other great products allow you to cover the gray utilizing a wax type roll-up stick, that you moisten before applying it directly to the gray hair. Those are super easy to use, but not real easy to wash out completely. I usually have to use a little bit of clarifying shampoo in those areas or a bulid up will result. I also love the colored sprays that are available now, like Tressa's and Bumble and Bumble's hair powder. For small thinning spots, there a few different keratin fiber products on the market that work well to 'fill in' those areas. I use one called ' Xfusion' sometimes, and it really does help until the next wash. Last but not least, thank God we have clip in hair extensions! I have had mine for many, many years now, and I love them. Just be sure to buy the 100 percent human hair ones, or you won't be able to style them. Whenever I have worn mine, and someone compliments my hair, I have always told them that I am wearing hair extensions, and show them. Even though, especially in the earlier days, women were glad to know of such a product, I think it always surprised them that I was so upfront about it. Listen, I would much rather not have the pressure of trying to measure up to that expectation all the time. Plus, if other women want healthier looking hair and can feel better as I did to wear them, then why not tell them? Then there is always the hat to fall back on. All of the old classic movies are filled with women wearing hats. But since I only like the way I look in cowboy hats, I can't seem to pull off the 'just wear a hat' solution. I intend to keep trying them on though, just in case.
